What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a $2.3 billion national initiative that helps Australians save around 30% upfront on the installation of approved home or business battery systems.

This program aims to make battery storage more affordable and accessible, allowing households and small businesses to store excess solar energy for later use. It can beduring the evening, at night, or on cloudy days.

By lowering installation costs and promoting self-consumption of solar power, the program encourages a shift toward energy independence and cleaner living.

When you install a new battery system, it generates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) — digital credits that represent the clean energy your system will produce and store over time.

Each STC has a monetary value that can be sold by your accredited installer. Instead of you handling this process, your installer deducts the value of those certificates directly from your installation cost — giving you an instant discount on your new battery.

In other words, you don’t wait for a rebate — you pay less upfront.

💡 It’s the government’s way of rewarding you instantly for investing in renewable energy storage.

Eligible Battery Size: Between 5 kWh and 100 kWh of usable capacity.

Who Can Apply: Homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities with new or existing rooftop solar systems.

System Requirements: The battery must be paired with a solar system — either new or existing.

One System Per Address: Each property can only claim one battery rebate.

Installation Date: Batteries installed and certified (with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work) on or after 1 July 2025 are eligible.

Product Approval: The battery must be listed on the Clean Energy Council’s Approved Product List and, if grid-connected, be capable of participating in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

Means Testing: There are no income limits — this program is open to all Australians.

What is the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Rebate — REPS Program?

The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) is a South Australian Government initiative designed to reward households that improve energy efficiency and support a stable, flexible power grid.

When you connect your home battery to an approved Virtual Power Plant (VPP), you become part of a smart network of homes that share stored energy during peak demand.

In return, you receive a cash rebate of up to $2,050, depending on your battery capacity and eligibility group.
The VPP rebate complements the Cheaper Home Batteries Program — meaning you can combine both incentives for maximum savings.

How Does It Work?

When you connect your battery to a VPP provider approved under REPS — such as AGL, Amber, ENGIE, GloBird, Origin, or sonnen — your system automatically communicates with the grid.

During high-demand periods, your VPP may draw a small amount of stored energy to support the network. You’ll continue to use your own solar power as normal and maintain full control over your battery system.

Once connected and verified, you’ll receive a cash rebate payment based on your system’s storage capacity and eligibility group.

Who Is Eligible?

Location: Residential or small business property within South Australia.

Connection: Battery must be connected to an approved VPP during the current program year.

Accreditation: Installation and connection must be completed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited retailer and installer.

Frequency: You must not have claimed a similar rebate at the same address within the past three years.

Multiple Batteries: You can connect more than one battery; maximum rebate applies up to 28 kWh total capacity.

System Type: Both new and existing batteries can qualify if connected this year.
