What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a $2.3 billion national initiative designed to make solar battery storage more affordable for Australian households and businesses. The program provides an upfront discount of around 30% on eligible home and commercial battery systems.

Its goal is simple: help more Australians store excess solar power and reduce reliance on the grid during peak evening hours or low-sunlight periods.

How Does the Cheaper Home Batteries Program Work?

When you install an eligible battery system, it generates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on the battery’s usable storage capacity.

Each STC represents a forecast amount of clean energy storage. Accredited installers can sell these certificates on the national STC market, and the value of these certificates is passed on to you as an upfront rebate.

This effectively reduces your battery installation cost instantly, making it a more affordable option for harnessing renewable energy.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the battery rebate, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Battery size: 5 kWh to 100 kWh (nominal capacity)
  • Eligible customers: Homeowners, small businesses, and community organisations
  • Solar requirement: The battery must be paired with new or existing rooftop solar
  • Add-on friendly: You can add a battery to an existing solar system if it meets all program requirements
  • One battery per address
  • Installation timing:
    • Battery must be installed and certified (with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work) on or after 1 July 2025
    • Systems installed before this date may still qualify if they are tested and certified on or after 1 July 2025
  • Approved products only: The battery must appear on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list
  • VPP-ready: Grid-connected batteries must be capable of joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Joining is optional.
  • Not means-tested: Income does not affect eligibility

Why Now: The Big Opportunity

au energy prices keep on climbing

Rising Electricity Prices

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is offering an upfront discount of around 30% on the cost of installing a small-scale battery system (5 kWh to 100 kWh nominal capacity) in homes or small businesses with solar.

The discount is delivered via the existing Small‑scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and will gradually decline until 2030.
Clean Energy Regulator

Typical eligible systems get a reduction of around $372 per usable kWh (at current STC values) for the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.
Carbon & Energy Management

With rising household electricity costs and more homes generating rooftop solar, adding a battery becomes a timely way to store energy, reduce grid reliance and take advantage of the rebate.
